Join us for an open, chat-style discussion on the importance of Black Work Affinity Groups in Maryland libraries. Featuring Shirley Mason, an experienced affinity group leader, this session will include honest conversation, practical tips, and a live Q&A. This program is ideal for library staff, leaders, and allies interested in building supportive, inclusive workplace communities.
Shirley Mason is a dedicated library professional and advocate for equity and inclusion within the library field. She previously served as President of the Baltimore County Public Library Affinity Group, Black Library Workers, where she provided leadership focused on community building, professional support, and advocacy for Black library staff. Shirley also served as Secretary of the Black Caucus of the Maryland Library Association (MLA), contributing to organizational governance and initiatives that uplift underrepresented voices in librarianship.
Currently, Shirley is an active member of the MLA Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) Panel, where she continues to support efforts that advance inclusive practices, equitable policies, and meaningful dialogue across the profession. She brings a strong passion for diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging, and is committed to fostering spaces where library workers and the communities they serve feel seen, valued, and empowered.
