WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR
Montgomery County Public Libraries (MCPL) is looking for a Senior Librarian to manage the operation of our branch award-winning library in the Montgomery County Correctional Facility (MCCF). The Senior Librarian position is a Branch Supervisor role.
The MCCF Library offers a full range of services to incarcerated individuals, including legal reference resources, materials, educational support, self-help and general popular interest reading materials for personal enrichment. The MCCF Library supports Department of Correction and Rehabilitation (DOCR) Programs and Services re-entry initiatives. A suitable candidate for this position will balance passion for working in a carceral environment and its unique challenges to ensure best practice library services.

What You'll Be Doing
Your primary duties will include:
- Oversee day-to-day operations of the MCCF Library Branch
- Provide direct supervision of library staff to include training or recommendations for training as necessary
- Maintain service statistics
- Routinely communicate to MCPL administration the status of MCCF Library operations and need for support as necessary
- Routinely communicate to the DOCR Deputy Warden for Programs and Services for clarity and support regarding library service in the context of DOCR policies and procedures
- Routinely communicate and collaborate with MCPL Collection Management for ongoing MCCF Library general collection development, as well as legal resources both digital and in print
- Serve on MCPL leadership committees and initiatives that may enhance MCCF branch operations
- Participate in professional organizations and associations with a correctional library service component
- Liaise with DOCR and MCPL to support the vision and mission of both departments in the context of library service

Hours for this position:
All employees should expect to work daytime, evening, and weekend hours; however, the MCCF Library is currently open on weekdays. The MCCF Library schedule could change at any time to include evening or weekend hours with sufficient notice.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education: Master’s degree in library science or library information science from a college or university accredited by the American Library Association.
Equivalency: No equivalency applies.
Experience: 4 years of professional library experience.
Licensure: Employees will be responsible for maintaining appropriate level of contact hours to sustain State licensure requirements for this position (Note: There will be no substitutions for this section).
Medical Exam Protocol: This position requires completion of a pre-employment Medical History Form as well to assess your ability to safely perform the essential duties of the role. You will also need to complete and pass a Drug Screen.
Background Check Protocol: This position requires completion and passing of a Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (DOCR) Background check.

Preferred Criteria, Interview Preferences

We will use preferred criteria screening questions:
- Proven experience leading a diverse team. Emphasis on developing and motivating staff by creating a culture of open communication, coaching and/or supervising personnel, including providing input to or creating performance evaluations and staff schedules.
- Experience leading meetings, creating agendas, and/or developing training materials.
- Providing customer service and resolving complex customer service issues in a library setting; being person in charge in absence of a manager or supervisor
- Technology skills to include knowledge of Integrated Library System (ILS), office equipment, mobile apps, MS Office software and troubleshooting computer hardware and peripherals.
We will use interview preference criteria:
- Work experience in a correctional setting
- Spanish language proficiency
- Basic understanding of the Montgomery County court system and legal reference work
- Experience leading a team or supervising personnel that includes writing performance evaluations
- Experience providing staff training with strategies to ensure mastery
- Experience managing and developing a library collection for incarcerated population
