
Emerging Technologies Librarian
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Under limited supervision, serves as the coordinator of a specific area of responsibility. Coordinates with supervisor to ensure that services are in alignment with the library's strategic goals and are implemented effectively. Responsible for assisting with the establishment of standards for services and collections, researching and formulating long range goals, developing policies, and planning and evaluating programs, services, and goals.
Under limited supervision, the Emerging Technologies Librarian ensures access to the library's various collections by performing original and copy cataloging for all library materials and assists with new material processing. This position also serves as the library's leader and expert of digital resources and technology, working with the Technology and Content Strategy Team to ensure that services are in alignment with the library's strategic goals and are implemented effectively. The successful candidate will be an enthusiastic user of technology who enjoys exploring, identifying and evaluating emerging trends and applying them in a library setting.

Essential Job Functions
- Coordinates and evaluates operations of area of responsibility, programs, and services, including identifying, evaluating, and implementing emerging technologies that enhance library services, programs, and user experiences, with a focus on continuous innovation and adaptability.
- Provides technical support and guidance to both staff and patrons, including troubleshooting hardware, software, and digital devices, ensuring smooth day-to-day tech operations within the library.
- Oversees the maintenance and upkeep of makerspace and digital lab technologies, including both hardware (e.g., 3D printers, audio/video equipment) and software (e.g., design programs, editing tools), ensuring all equipment is functional, updated, and accessible for staff and public use.
- Develops programs and services that meet the needs of the public and are aligned with best practices set forth by ALA and state educational standards, including creating tech-focused programs and events that introduce emerging tools and platforms to the public in accessible, hands-on ways, with a primary focus on adults.
- Coordinates programs and services by working with agencies and organizations outside the library to develop programs of mutual interest, working with City departments, and ensuring that services are reaching the community.
- Acts as a mentor to staff by assisting with their professional development and morale, and providing assistance as needed.
- Provide classes, events, and programs to the community and staff, including designing and leading technology training sessions, one-on-one tutorials, and public classes that build digital literacy and technology confidence across diverse patron and staff groups.
- Assists patrons regarding reference requests and performs readers' advisory services; responds to citizen requests for assistance in using the department's computer system.
- Maintains knowledge of the reference and circulating collections and electronic resources; maintains reference and circulating collections, including collaborating with the Technology and Content Strategy Assistant Manager to support and manage circulating non-traditional tech items (e.g., hotspots, tablets, maker tools), including maintenance, training materials, and usage guidelines.
- Interprets and applies library policies and procedures for customers and staff to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.
- Assists in reclassification projects and special projects as needed.
- Assists in weeding, selection and overall maintenance of collection.
- Maintains an awareness of new literature, technologies, trends and advances in the profession; reads professional literature; maintains professional affiliations; attends workshops and training sessions as appropriate.
- Assists in performance of tasks at the circulation desks, including checking library books in and out, registering patrons for a borrower's card, shelving books and maintaining records and tabulations.
- Conducts introductory tours of the library.
- Provides training for employees and patrons to improve computer skills, including developing user guides, FAQs, and other instructional materials that support the use of library technologies and services, making tools and resources easier to understand and use.
- Collects fines for overdue and lost materials and fees for the use of the copier.
- Provides reader advisory services to service populations by listening to patron's subject interests and needs and selecting materials which are appropriate in format and interest.
- Gathers, organizes, analyzes, examines, or evaluates data or information and may prescribe action based on such data or information.
- Gives information, guidance, or assistance to people which directly facilitates task accomplishment; may give instructions or assignments to helpers or assistants.
- Performs related work as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Master's Degree in an ALA accredited program in Library Science or possession of Librarian's Professional Certificate from the Commonwealth of Virginia State Library Board and experience in a library setting or closely related field; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities.
Requires a valid driver’s license.
