The Enoch Pratt Free Library has an opening for a Manager of Adult Services.  The Manager will be an effective leader who is committed to innovation and supporting community in a large metropolitan area.

Under the direction of the Director of Programming, the Manager of Adult Services develops and implements innovative programs and services that support the strategic priorities of the Enoch Pratt Free Library. The Manager coordinates and supports major and branch-level adult programs at the Central Library and neighborhood branches, and administers corresponding budgets. In addition to directly supervising two adult programming specialists within the Programs team, the Manager of Adult Services leads the system-wide adult programming committee and collaborates regularly with library leadership, staff, and stakeholders on library programs and initiatives. They are responsible for establishing and maintaining community partnerships with Baltimore City agencies and organizations, and may represent the library on local, state, and regional committees and workgroups.

This position will require evening and weekend hours.

Salary: $79,507 to $103,275 annually

Summary of Duties
The summary of duties listed below is not exhaustive. Additional duties are dependent upon the needs of the hiring department.

  • Establishes and implements goals and objectives for adult programs and services in support of the library’s mission and strategic plan.
  • Hires, supervises, mentors, and evaluates direct reports. Assists branch and department managers with the hiring and evaluation of staff who support adult programming and services.
  • Coordinates the implementation of system-wide initiatives and large-scale adult programming, including One Maryland One Book, Final Fridays, and Peabody in the Library.
  • Reviews and approves branch-initiated adult program proposals and calendar entries, ensuring that programs are in alignment with the library’s mission and strategic plan and accurately entered and advertised.
  • Gathers and analyzes data to evaluate programs.
  • Implements solutions to maximize program participation and impact.
  • Participates in the orientation and training of new adult programming librarians and implements ongoing training and professional development sessions for staff.
  • Leads the system-wide adult programming meetings. Meets regularly with adult programming staff individually.
  • Creates and maintains community partnerships to meet identified community needs and further adult programming, services, and literary events throughout the community.
  • Develops and administers the adult programming budgets. Manages vendor bookings and supply purchasing.
  • Collaborates with other library divisions and departments in support of adult programming and services.
  • Stays current with developments, changes, and trends in the fields of adult literature and library services and programs.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree from an accredited college or university in Library Science or a related area.
  • Five years' experience in an urban public library, preferably a multi-branch system, or a public institution.
  • Three years of management or supervisory experience.
  • Experience in adult literature and programming trends. Relevant experience in coordinating and implementing public programs.
  • Experience in project management and administration, as well as leading cross-divisional teams.
  • Physical Requirements: Physical exertion such as standing; or recurring activities such as bending, crouching, reaching; pushing loaded book trucks; or recurring lifting of moderately heavy items such as boxes of books or journals.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Masters in Library Science (MLS or MLIS) from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited college or university.
  • Maryland Public Librarian Certificate, or requirements necessary to apply for a Maryland Public Librarian Certificate, within 90 days of starting employment.
  • Fluency in Spanish, Arabic, Chinese, French, Korean, or other foreign languages.
  • Multicultural experience.
  • Experience with relevant technology for virtual and hybrid programming, including Streamyard and Zoom.
  • Experience with Asana, Trello, or similar project management tools.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Strong commitment to delivering excellent customer service to a diverse population in an urban environment.
  • Experience with the planning, coordination, and implementation of adult programming, as well as the skill of analyzing data to inform these processes and strengthen outcomes.
  • Knowledge and skills necessary to effectively oversee, guide, and evaluate the work of staff in realizing system objectives related to programming.
  • Ability to meet deadlines, prioritize, delegate and manage multiple projects and programs.
  • Ability to work collaboratively across internal divisions and be efficient and effective when working independently.
  • Experience in establishing collaborative relationships with a variety of municipal and non-profit agencies and organizations.
  • Ability to resolve problems and conflict with diplomacy and discretion.
  • Ability to work a varied schedule inclusive of evenings and weekends.
