New Study Co-Authored by Michael Blackwell Looks at Ebook Availability, Licensing, and Pricing in Canada and the U.S.
A new study co-authored by MLA member and Director of St. Mary's County Library, Michael Blackwell, looks at Ebook Availability, Licensing, and Pricing in Canada and the U.S.
The research found some positive trends: 90%+ of popular titles are now available digitally with more licensing options than before. However, it also reveals that digital books cost significantly more than print, "perpetual access" licenses are disappearing as Big Five publishers moved to time-limited terms, and libraries must repeatedly buy the same titles to maintain access. While smaller publishers offer fairer terms, escalating costs make building sustainable digital collections increasingly challenging.
